Search
How do I search most effectively?

Use the general search bar and the filters on the left to narrow down the search results.

Search with search operators

You can use various search operators to refine your search.

Use an * for unknown or wildcard terms. Note the placement of the *:

  • work* also finds terms such as working, worker, workplace etc.
  • *work also finds, for example, framework, paperwork or similar terms
  • *work* also finds steelworker, hardworking etc.

If you are looking for search terms consisting of several words in a certain order or people with first and last names, it is best to use "". For example: "German Democratic Republic". This search will only show the results that contain the three words together, in this order. The same applies to personal names or other multi-part names. For example, if you search for Walter Ulbricht without "", you will get all search results containing Walter or Ulbricht.

If you want to search for several terms at the same time, which do not necessarily have to be in a certain order, use the + sign or AND. For example:

  • Honecker + Beelitz + arrest
  • Honecker AND Beelitz AND arrest
Search transcriptions

You can search through transcriptions using the search option within the filter. For optimal results, combine this with search terms in the general search bar. For instance, you can quickly find a newsreel report about 'snow' (transcript search) in 'Munich' (keyword search) this way.
